What's so great about coloring, anyways?

Lots of people find coloring to be relaxing (children AND adults!). I'm really excited to share a free coloring page that I designed as a thank you for being here.

I also want to tell you what I get out of coloring and other creative practices, and maybe you'll give it a try! I hope you enjoy the coloring page, and stay tuned for more.

The Top Reasons to Try Coloring

1. Coloring is Meditative

Have you ever gotten out your art supplies, started drawing or coloring, and then you look up and it's been an hour? This happens to me all the time. I get into a flow state, where I feel like I could just keep coloring forever and ever.

Flow state is when you become singularly focused on one task, and you feel totally immersed in whatever it is that you're doing. For me, this is like meditation. I stop thinking about other things, I stop comparing myself to other people, and I just experience. Coloring pages are really helpful for this, since you don't need to worry about coming up with an original composition.

2. Coloring Pages Help Me Sleep

I've been dealing with insomnia for years. Years, I tell you! But recently, I've gotten really serious about sleep hygiene and trying to help my body fall asleep at night.

Listen, I'm as addicted to my phone as anybody. It's a problem! But a key to my fight-insomnia-protocol involves putting my phone down and doing some relaxing activities. I often like to read, or listen to some quiet music. Analog coloring is such a great way to wind down, too! And because coloring is an activity that's not for work, it's not stressful. There's no pressure here! Just an enjoyable, relaxing, pre-bed activity to help wind down. Coloring pages have already been designed and drawn, and all that's left to do is the fun part!

3. Coloring Is Actually a Skill

Listen, there's a reason why we encourage kids to color. It's great for fine motor skill and hand eye coordination.

I work as a professional illustrator and muralist, and I've had a lot of time to develop a steady hand. It's through hours and hours spent drawing and coloring that I've been able to sharpen my skills. Even if your goal isn't to become a professional (which, I recognize, is not everybody's goal!), coloring is a skill you can absolutely develop if you practice. And I have just the coloring page for you!

Fun, relaxing, AND skill-building? That's a win in my book!

Feeling ready to grab your free coloring page? All you have to do is click the link to download. You can decide to print the coloring page and use analog tools (which I highly recommend, there's nothing quite as fun as playing with art supplies), or you can save it on your tablet and color with your favorite drawing app. Either way, I hope you enjoy this coloring page as much as I have!
